Aching Arms responds to news on rapid national investigation into NHS England maternity and neonatal services.

23/06/2025

All of us at Aching Arms welcome the announcement yesterday, from the Department of Health and Social Care, that a rapid national investigation into NHS England maternity and neonatal services has been ordered by the Secretary of State, Wes Streeting.

For 15 years, Aching Arms have been relentless in raising awareness and advocating for improvements to the care of families who experience pregnancy and baby loss.

We, alongside our charity partners, speak up for bereaved families who have been devastated by loss. We are proud to support hundreds of midwives and nurses who work in deeply difficult circumstances.

It is heartening to see that the voice of bereaved parents, from all communities and midwives working in challenging environments will be heard in this investigation.

Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, said: "What they (bereaved families) have experienced is devastating - deeply painful stories of trauma, loss and a lack of basic compassion - caused by failures in NHS maternity care that should never have happened. Their bravery in speaking out has made it clear: we must act - and we must act now."

Our Founder & CEO, Leanne Turner said, 'We couldn't agree more, urgent action is needed. It is essential that NHS England make improvements and keep all mothers/birthing people and babies safe."
