A week long campaign dedicated to raising Black communities’ awareness of services providing care and support after pregnancy and baby loss.
Alicia Burnett is a registered midwife working on a midwife-led helpline for Black and mixed Black heritage women. Combined with her personal experience of pregnancy and baby loss and with her professional experience of supporting bereaved parents, Alicia founded Black Baby Loss Awareness Week to bring attention to the disproportionately high rates of pregnancy and baby loss in Black communities and raise Black communities' awareness of the professionals and services that provide care and support for those who have experienced these types of loss.
As above, we understand that stillbirth rates are highest among babies from Black Caribbean and Black Ethnic groups. Black Baby Loss Awareness Week is important as it raises awareness of the support and services that are available to black communities who experience pregnancy and baby loss and also highlights the disproportionately high rates of pregnancy and baby loss in Black communities.
You can read Alicia Burnett's press release here.
Read the latest MBBRACE Report here that details that whilst stillbirth rates have decreased in 2023, babies of Black ethnicity remain more than twice as likely to be stillborn than babies of White ethnicity.
